Wander New Jersey’s South Mountain Fairy Trail

  • August 19, 2025

Need an escape from the real world? Discover a fairy wonderland at the South Mountain Reservation Rahway Fairy Trail in New Jersey (known as the South Mountain Fairy Trail) on a half-mile loop adorned with mystical miniature houses and castles made of natural materials. A former special ed teacher created these intricate little pieces of whimsy along the trail in 2011, and since then, it’s become an imaginative escape for families with young children. Read on for details on how the South Mountain Fairy Trail in New Jersey will delight adults and kids. And if you want to keep the fairy theme going, visit the Tenafly Nature Center Fairy Trail in Tenafly for more fairy magic. (featured photo credit: NJ MOM)

Step into nature

When you find the marked wooded path, you’ll enter a magical place filled with fairy homes built into hollows and burrowed into roots. For over a decade, The Fairy Trail has been within the South Mountain Reservation, a 2,000-acre nature reserve part of the Essex County Park System that winds through portions of Maplewood, Millburn, West Orange, and South Orange. The enchanting homes have details that delight kids and adults—a peek inside reveals teeny couches made from funghi, acorns used as chairs, and twigs made into beds.

Find the fairy magic

Follow the white-blazed path starting at the Locust Grove picnic area, where you’ll see all sorts of teeny homes. Kids will want to look inside (but please don’t touch) and can find the structures within secret spots among the tree trunks and roots. The adorable structures are fragile and decorated with natural elements used to create miniature spaces where a fairy might hang out. As you walk along the half-mile trail, take in the views, including a few waterfalls along the way.

More to explore

After you exit the fairy trail, check out the rest of the park at the South Mountain Reservation. The Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange is a few miles away and part of the reservation, along with Essex County’s TreeTop Adventure Course and Mini Golf Safari. Head to the waterfront regatta-themed playground and grab a bite at the outdoor patio on McLoone’s Boathouse to wrap up an enchanted day chasing fairies.

What to know before you go

To access the fairy trail, park at the Locust Grove entrance at 197 Glen Avenue in Millburn or across the street. Go toward the Rahway Trail from the parking lot, and you’ll see a trailhead and a large Fairy Trail welcome sign. Though the trail is exciting, advise your kids of the trail etiquette before you start—no touching the structures or removing materials; stay on the trail to view the homes to prevent damaging vegetation and the path; and don’t add anything to the path. There are no restrooms, but porta-johns are nearby, and you need to dispose of trash outside the path. If you decide to make a day of it, picnic tables are at the end of the parking lot up the path to the right. And the best part—South Mountain Reservation is free and open to the public every day, year-round, and its beauty and features change with the seasons.
