Cape May SJ downtowns

From charming Main Streets to lively shore-side hubs, South Jersey’s downtowns are packed with local flavor, family-friendly fun, and plenty of small-town charm. Exploring these walkable communities feels like a quick getaway without ever leaving the state, with each destination offering its own mix of history, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Spend the day exploring the shore in Stone Harbor, enjoy waterfront views and boutique shops in Cape May, or discover artsy vibes and great eats in Haddonfield. Whether you’re planning a weekend outing or just looking for somewhere new to explore with the kids, these South Jersey downtowns are worth adding to your family bucket list. Downtowns to visit in South Jersey

Get nostalgic in downtown Cape May

Drive off Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway, and you’ll be transported to Cape May, a dreamy seaside village dotted with Victorian architecture, cozy inns, and lots of coastal views. The first stop on your list should be the Washington Street Mall, a pedestrian-friendly area teeming with shops and restaurants. Grab a bite to eat at Fins Bar & Grille, find some treats to bring home at the Cape May Peanut Butter Company, and keep your kids happy with a gourmet ice cream sandwich from Peace Pie. Stroll the sidewalks to the candy-colored gingerbread houses that make downtown Cape May on the list as a National Historic Landmark. Of course, kids will want to spend time on the sand, but there’s also the Cape May County Park & Zoo, the Cape May Lighthouse, and the Nature Center of Cape May. Or experience whale and dolphin watching with the Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center. If this is more than a day trip, staying at Congress Hall is a perfect kid-friendly stop.

Hunt for dinos in downtown Haddonfield

Kings Highway is one of the oldest roads in New Jersey and home to this Camden County village with historic architecture and a neighborly feel. Relive your childhood with your kids and shop for games, trains, books, and more at Happy Hippo Toys, or sugar up with gummies, chocolates, and jelly beans at The Candy Buffet. Stop for a bite at The British Chip Shop, where you can feast on battered fish, chips, and other favorites from across the pond. Afterward, hunt for dinosaur bones at Pennypacker Park, a national historic landmark where the world’s first complete dinosaur skeleton—“Haddy” the Hadrosaurus—was discovered in 1858. Or take a free tour and history lesson at the 200-year-old facility at the Indian King Tavern Museum. If you want more to do, visit Haddon Lake, Camden Adventure Aquarium, or Battleship New Jersey, which are all nearby.

Spend family time in Ocean City

Affectionately known as a family-oriented seaside resort, this is a great place to bring the whole family for a day of fun and create memories that will last a lifetime. With a boardwalk that stretches 2.5 miles, gorgeous beaches, and fun amusement rides, your little ones won’t want to leave. But one of the best parts of Ocean City is its downtown area, where Asbury Avenue, the main drag, is filled with delectable eats and fun shops, and it hosts unique events. Check out Hoy’s 5 & 10, loaded with every essential for a beach day, and Asbury Kitchen, which serves an all-day breakfast menu (pancakes for dinner, anyone?).

Find the seashore at its best in Stone Harbor

Did someone say a day at one of the cutest Jersey Shore downtowns? Stone Harbor has it all – shopping, dining, adventures, and shore views that invite you to spend time on the sand. The beachy shops are all along downtown, where you can find clothes, bikes, candy, art, and all things for kids. If you work up an appetite when you shop ’til you drop (we definitely do), then choose from the 96th Street Bar & Grille, Back Bay Seafood, and more. Make sure you check out the events calendar before you go for all the fun things happening.
